I have been excited about this movie since I first heard of it being made and it was even better than I had anticipated! Unsung Hero is a personal movie, based on the early life of the Smallbones. Both my husband and I watched this movie and were blown away by the talent and story telling. This is a winning film that will likely garner lots of attention.
I have been a For King & Country fan for years, since almost the very beginning of their recording career. I loved “Priceless” and “Journey to Bethlehem.” If you have listened to any music from Rebecca St. James or For King & Country or seen either of these movies, you KNOW that the Smallbone family is full of very talented people!
What is Unsung Hero about?
When David Smallbone’s successful music company collapses, he moves his family from Australia to the United States in search of a brighter future. With nothing more than their six children, their suitcases, and their love of music, David (for KING + COUNTRY’s Joel Smallbone) and his pregnant wife Helen (Daisy Betts) set out to rebuild their lives from the ground up. Based on a remarkable true story, a mum’s faith stands against all odds; and inspires her husband and children to hold onto theirs.
The Smallbone family faces money issues in their home country of Australia and head to the United States. The movie tells the story of this time frame, when life was tough but they were shown love and support from others and the family held on to each other and their faith in God. Nothing is sugar coated in this movie, and you will be moved by the love and faith and incredible story that the Smallbones have to tell.
Who stars in Unsung Hero?
Joel Smallbone does and amazing job portraying his real life father, David Smallbone, in this movie. Daisy Betts shines in the role of Helen Smallbone. Other cast members include Candace Cameron Bure, Kirrilee Berger, Terry O’Quinn, Lucas Black, and others. Other family members such as Rebecca St. James herself show up! St. James plays the flight attendant in one scene.
Can I take my kids to see Unsung Hero?
The movie is rated PG for “thematic elements.” I would definitely let my children watch this movie. It does have some family conflict and shouting, one face slap and throwing a phone/fax machine to the floor in anger. There is a death of a family member mentioned and issues like poverty, depression and homelessness, but nothing is overwhelming unless your child is highly sensitive to those issues. It is a tasteful movie with no cursing except for the word “hell” in a song played towards the beginning of the movie, by another band. No drug and alcohol content. There is some light kissing and the parents are shown in bed together, but no sexual content.
