I'm not Catholic. I attend the Church of Christ (not Mormon…just plain and simple "Church of Christ.") I didn't grow up knowing a thing about Lent. My husband challenged the teens of his first youth group to give up something that they relied too heavily on for Lent…for Jesus. Some folks didn't approve of this idea, as it was too "different" from what we're used to, but I thought it was a great idea. Giving up an "idol," whether it be food, drink, candy, TV, Facebook, Pinterest, whatever it may be….is usually a good idea and Lent is a good chance to test yourself and test to see whether or not you REALLY need what you have given up.
So what am I giving up for Lent? Well, I'm taking this opportunity to publicly commit to giving up Dr. Pepper and Mr. Pibb. I've done it before and really, I haven't had much of these drinks all year, but I need to stick with it. This stuff just isn't good for me and it's very easy for me to become addicted. PLUS, I don't want my children to become addicted!
So what are you going to give up this year??
