The Birthday Party Dilemma

Captain Fussybuckets will turn 3 on November 1st.  We’re going to have a small, family birthday party on that following Saturday, I believe.  Daddy has already arranged to have a small bounce house, perfect for Fussybuckets and his other 3 three year-old cousins, and possibly Baby D.  But the dilemma is what to do for the cake.  I have asked him what he wants for a birthday cake and his answers have ranged from a horse, a balloon, a frog, “Ni Hao, Kai-Lan,” to the latest, a basketball.  I figured out that I could possibly, easily make a basketball.  Last year he was in to horses and balloons, so a local bakery made this cake for him:
Don’t judge, we lived in a small town and it was a local bakery.  Trust me, it was DELICIOUS and he was SO excited about it!  (He just asked me why that elephant was on the cake, by the way.  HAHA!)
We also just filled the rec center of the children’s home with balloons.  He was in 2 year old heaven.
So anyway…back to the cake.  Should I go with a basketball cake and Kai-Lan cupcakes?  That is my plan, but I just don’t know.  I’m not big on themes, as I can never agree on just one.  I remember when I was planning his nursery, everyone would ask me what my theme was and I honestly didn’t have one, so I just said “animals.”  His crib was jungle animals, he had frogs on his wall, and cute little puppy toys.  Oh well.  It happens.  I’m just not a theme kind of mommy.
This definitely makes me want to go all out with a Kai-Lan themed birthday party.  But yeah, I’m not crafty.  And then I have thoughts of “will my son hate me when he’s 15 because I made him a girly birthday party at 3?”  The answer is probably yes.  So….I’ll just stick with my basketball cake and Kai-Lan cupcake toppers.  I can do that much….I think.  Stay tuned…..
p.s.  If you want to make super cool, boyish Kai-Lan stuff for his party, I’d totally love it!  haha!
