What is an air fryer?
An air fryer is a helpful kitchen appliance designed to cook food by circulating hot air around it. It uses convection to rapidly and evenly heat the food, similar to a traditional deep fryer but with significantly less oil. Air fryers typically have a heating element and a fan that circulates the hot air within a compact cooking chamber.
The main advantage of using an air fryer is that it allows you to achieve a crispy texture similar to frying, but with a much lower amount of oil. This can be appealing to those who are looking for a healthier alternative to deep frying. Air fryers are versatile and can be used to cook a variety of foods, including vegetables, meats, and even desserts. Pastries and breakfast items are popular air fryer foods, too.
We have found our air fryers to be extremely useful in heating frozen foods, quickly cooking or rewarming foods, and making new recipes like my air fryer s’mores cookies! One of our favorite things to do is reheat restaurant leftovers in the air fryer. If you are reheating chicken tenders or fries, the air fryer is the ONLY way to reheat!
To use an air fryer, you simply place the food in the cooking basket, set the desired temperature and cooking time, and let the appliance do the work. Many people appreciate the convenience and speed of air fryers, as they can cook food quickly and without the mess associated with traditional frying methods.
What is wrong with non-stick coating?
Non-stick coatings have been helpful to cooks for many years. It makes clean up easier and frustrations in the kitchen over burnt and stuck on foods much less.
Non-stick coating is commonly found in cookware such as frying pans and baking sheets. The primary concern comes from the fact that traditional non-stick coatings are made with a substance called PTFE, commonly known by the brand name Teflon.
When non-stick cookware is heated to high temperatures, typically above 500°F (260°C), it can release fumes containing perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a chemical that has been linked to certain health issues in animal studies. PFOA is considered a persistent environmental pollutant and has been associated with various health concerns.
While PFOA has been largely phased out of the production of non-stick coatings, there are still some concerns about the potential release of other harmful compounds at high temperatures. Additionally, the durability of non-stick coatings can decrease over time, especially if scratched or damaged, leading to the potential ingestion of small particles.
To address these concerns, manufacturers have developed alternative non-stick coatings that claim to be free of PFOA and other potentially harmful substances. Additionally, using non-stick cookware responsibly, avoiding overheating, and using utensils that won’t scratch the coating can help minimize potential risks.
It’s essential for individuals to make informed choices about their cookware and to follow care instructions provided by manufacturers. If someone has specific health concerns or is looking for alternatives, there are various cookware options available, including stainless steel, glass, cast iron, ceramic, and other materials that do not rely on non-stick coatings.

The sleek and stylish design of these appliances adds aesthetic appeal, making them a standout feature on your countertop. The transparent glass not only looks sophisticated but also contributes to an open and inviting kitchen atmosphere.

Ceramic air fryers are supposedly better for you because ceramic doesn’t have the ‘forever chemicals’ associated with non-stick air fryers and are considered some of the safest air fryers. Ceramic is also much more durable and harder to scratch, so it will likely last longer and be a great choice if that is what you are interested in.
Ceramic coatings provide excellent non-stick properties without the use of synthetic materials. This natural non-stick surface not only makes cooking and cleaning a breeze but also reduces the need for excessive amounts of oil.

I also wrote a post about our oven/range with air fry and while sometimes I prefer to use a more compact air fryer, this one is still great! This safe air fryer is a great option if you have a large family and want to make healthy meals for them. You can cook a lot of chicken wings at the same time in the oven, but you will want a large capacity pan under the basket to catch all the drippings from the wings.

Tips for making any air fryer less toxic
If you cannot splurge for a teflon free air fryer right now, here are some great tips to make your current air fryer less toxic:
1. If your air fryer basket is scratched, you will want to make sure nothing sticks to it or is touching the cracked surface. Try using air fryer parchment paper or aluminum foil to prevent sticking and potentially ingesting some nonstick coating. You can even use silicone bakeware in the air fryer if that is more your style.
2. Air fryers get the job done more quickly by using hot temperatures. The concerns about potential health risks associated with high temperatures in cooking appliances, such as air fryers, often revolve around the release of certain chemicals, like acrylamide, which can form during the cooking process, particularly in foods rich in carbohydrates. Acrylamide is a naturally occurring chemical that can form when certain foods are cooked at high temperatures, such as frying, baking, or roasting. It is not specific to air fryers but can be produced in various cooking methods. BUT if you want to avoid acrylamide, you will want to turn down the temperature and cook more slowly, or use a different cooking method if it makes more sense.
3. Order a new basket if it is scratched. Sometimes companies will give you a discount on accessories that have been damaged, but sometimes you cannot. Contact the company with any scratch concerns.
4. Lastly, if you would prefer to not worry about harmful chemicals, just throw away your teflon-coated air fryers and get a nontoxic air fryer! It’s a great time to add a new air fryer to your Christmas list!
