Where did the French Dip sandwich originate?
The French Dip sandwich is a classic American dish with a history as rich and savory as its flavors. Despite its name, the French Dip’s origins are deeply rooted in the United States, particularly in Los Angeles, and its creation is shrouded in a bit of culinary mystery.
The story goes back to the early 20th century when two Los Angeles-based restaurants, Philippe’s and Cole’s, both claimed to have invented French Dip sandwiches. The most popular legend attributes the creation to Philippe Mathieu, the founder of Philippe’s, who opened the restaurant in 1908. As the tale goes, one day in 1918, Mathieu accidentally dropped a French roll into the roasting pan filled with beef drippings. Instead of discarding the soggy roll, a customer who witnessed the mishap requested the sandwich. Intriguingly, the customer enjoyed the flavorful result so much that the French Dip was born.
On the other hand, Cole’s P.E. Buffet, established in 1908, also lays claim to the French Dip’s invention. According to their version of events, the sandwich was created in 1908 when a customer requested a sandwich with a side of gravy. The sandwich, dunked in the flavorful jus, became an instant hit.
The mystery surrounding the true origin only adds to the charm of the French Dip’s legacy. What is certain is that this sandwich quickly gained popularity in the early 20th century, becoming a staple in diners and restaurants across the country.
The classic French Dip consists of thinly sliced roast beef placed on a French roll or baguette, and the sandwich is typically served with a side of au jus – the flavorful meat juices. The au jus serves as both a dipping sauce and a means to keep the sandwich moist and juicy.
Over the years, the French Dip has undergone various reinterpretations and regional adaptations. Some variations include different types of cheeses, additions of caramelized onions or sautéed mushrooms, and the use of various condiments to enhance the flavor profile.

Making egg rolls in the air fryer is my favorite way to prepare them. The egg rolls come out crispy on the outside without overcooking the filling, and they taste so much better than making them in the oven or microwave. Siobhán Alvarez-Borland, FunFamilyMeals.com
