Call me crazy, but I have always loved to eat black eyed peas. My mom would serve them with meals and I thought they were SO delicious! I find that in different parts of the country and in different families, New Year’s Day traditions are very different. We always had black eyed peas on New Year’s Day because it was the tradition that if you ate them that day, you would have good luck that year. Of course it’s just a fun tradition, but still, black eyed peas should be eaten on New Year’s Day!
What’s the best way to eat black eyed peas?
Since black eyed peas are pretty much just beans, they can be swapped for any recipe that calls for beans. Black Eyed Pea Dip
Black Eyed Pea Dip
This Black Eyed Pea Dip is great for New Year's Eve parties or year round!
Ingredients
- 2 cans black eyed peas, drained
- 1/4 cup sour cream
- 4 oz cream cheese
- 1/4 cup salsa
- 1/4 tsp cumin
- 1/8 tsp garlic and/or onion powder
- 1/8 tsp salt
- 1 cup cheddar, Mexican cheese blend, and/or Monterrey Jack cheese
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°.
- In a cast iron skillet, combine all ingredients except cheese.
- Cook over medium temperature, slightly smashing some of the peas while mixing the ingredients.
- When all ingredients are incorporated, turn off burner and top with cheese.
- Cook in a 350° oven for 25-30 minutes, until dip is bubbly.
- Serve warm with tortilla chips!
